A recent article in Kilden kjønnsforskning.no explores the increasing presence of women leading far-right parties in Europe, despite these parties often having lower female representation among voters, members, and elected officials. Professor Ragnhild Louise Muriaas from the University of Bergen, Principal Investigator of the SUCCESS project, provides insight into this paradox.
She notes that while the number of female leaders in such parties is growing, they are still exceptions in a male-dominated landscape. These leaders are sometimes portrayed as "mother figures," which can serve to soften the party's image and appeal to a broader electorate.
The article also discusses how newer, less established parties may offer more opportunities for women to ascend to leadership roles, and how the selection of female leaders can be a strategic move to attract female voters.
